& Performance Opportunities

BAX’s overarching mission is to support artists-in-progress. Our Teen Programs encompass five core values — skill-building, creative choice, collaboration, performance, and community — and include educational classes and workshops, professional development, and performance event opportunities.

BAX Teen Artists Learners and Leaders (TALL) Council

The TALL Council is a free and youth-led leadership community of engaged, ambitious and motivated teen artists eager to deepen their engagement with the performing arts. Throughout the year, the Council produces teaching and learning workshops as well as open studio and performance shares with peers and professional guest artists. The Council also attends pre-professional and professional performance events at BAX and throughout NYC. Membership to the TALL Council is open to BAX and non-BAX high school-aged students. The Chair of the TALL Council is Nasrene Haj, BAX Alumni and Director/Founder of The Creators Collective. READ MORE.

Classes & Workshops

BAX offers classes in dance, theater, and tumbling with an emphasis on cultivating creative expression. Our most advanced educational programming for teens includes several year-long Performance Workshops and Youth Companies:

Other educational opportunities include:

  • Modern Technique classes taught by Guest Artists (requires previous experience)
  • Annual BAXco Guest Artist Master Class (open class, drop in)

Curious teens are encouraged to contact Education Manager Casey Hayes-Deats (casey@bax.org) for more information/guidance about class registration.

Professional Development & Employment

BAX’s Education Department offers several internships throughout the calendar year: two administrative positions (school year/summer) and one community outreach position (winter). BAX also hires High School and College students for its School Breaks Arts Programs (President’s Week, Spring Break and Summer). Internship and job positions are listed  on the BAX employment opportunity page, HERE.

Festivals & Performance Opportunities

Our free youth festivals provide an opportunity for teen artists from all backgrounds to find a common bond through the performing arts. BAX’s annual YouthWorks Festival (ages 8-18) and Teen Arts Conference (ages 13-18) are structured to treat teen artists with the respect given to professionals. They include opportunities to develop one’s own work, be mentored by, and learn from, professional choreographers, playwrights, directors, lighting designers and production staff, and perform in the BAX Theater.
