We now offer tiered tuition rates!

At BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange, we foster creativity, encourage exploration, and provide a positive and nurturing environment. Our Summer Arts Program draws from our year-round education programs to provide young artists with opportunities to explore different forms of art and performance each week (including visual art, circus, dance, theater, tumbling, and music) while working towards an informal performance or gallery sharing. Guest arts specialists teach daily workshops, while a well-trained staff of group leaders and counselors support indoor and outdoor play and performance activities.

Children entering Kindergarten through 6th grade participate in three different groups according to age: NanoBAXers, MegaBAXers, and GigaBAXers. All three groups are staffed with an adult to child ratio of at least 1:6, and go to Washington Park daily for outdoor social play.

“My son had a wonderful camp experience. He attended all 7 weeks of camp which worked very well for our family. He adores his counselors and counselors-in-training (CITs). He really responded well to the gentle approach to dealing with any discipline issues. He said that one day he’d like to become a CIT. We’ll be back for sure.”

NanoBAXers (entering K – 1st grade)

Each week, Nanos investigate a different exploratory theme through daily performing arts and visual arts activities facilitated by guest arts specialists. Additional small group activities and creative play stations are designed and facilitated by the Nano core staff, appealing to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. These experiences culminate in an interactive gallery share with families in the BAX Theater on Thursday afternoons.

NanoBAXers group capacity is 20.

See the 2018 Exploratory Themes Below:

Week 1 (July 2-6, no program on July 4th): Home is where the heart is! Through visual art, song, and movement, we’ll explore what physical and inner qualities make our different homelands unique and heartlands special.

Week 2 (July 9-13): BAX Robots are made to move and groove, play and perform. Through dance, tumbling, and storytelling we will discover our inner robot’s character and physicality and use recycled materials to bring these characters to life!

Week 3 (July 16-20): Put on your urban designer’s hat and join us to create the people, places, and things that make up our very own fantasy future cities. Using crafts, movements, and above all imagination, we’ll become architects of the future!

Week 4 (July 23-27): Through night and day, by foot or by paw, we’ll explore worlds near and far, discovering and embodying all the wild things we meet along the way. Roar!

Week 5 (July 30-August 3): Let’s see what happens when we take fairy tale classics and place them in our own backyard: Brooklyn! Join us for creative play, movement, and art-making as we discover how our own version of these stories unfold.

Week 6 (August 6-10): Join BAX for a creative celebration through song, story, dance, and art that honors our heroes past and present as we explore our own heroic qualities and uncover the future heroes we will become.

Week 7 (August 13-17): With the end of summer getting near, it’s time to use our imaginations to bring the beach to us. We’ll tell stories by the sea, play beach blanket bingo, and tumble through some gnarly waves.

MegaBAXers (entering 2nd – 3rd grade) and
GigaBAXers (entering 4th – 6th grade)

Each week, the Megas and Gigas work with their own guest arts specialist as well as their core staff to explore an arts discipline. Artists work in specialty groups to cultivate new skills and manage project elements while collaborating as a larger ensemble towards a performance. Additional creative enrichments and performance activities supplement this process and are facilitated by the core staff of Mega/Giga group leaders and counselors.

MegaBAXers group capacity is 25. GigaBAXers group capacity is 20.

See the 2018 Arts Disciplines Below:

Week 1 (July 2-6, no program July 4th): In an exploration of various arts media, young artists use the farthest reaches of their imaginations to go beyond ordinary arts-and-crafts, creating a whirlwind of individual and group paintings, found object sculptures, collages, and drawings that engage different themes and reflect their view of the world.

Week 2 (July 9-13): Theater at BAX encourages the development of dynamic performance artists through visceral experiences engaging voices, bodies, and imaginations. Participants work independently and collaboratively to establish their own unique circus and performance style.

Week 4 (July 23-27): During this week, young media consumers become media producers by exploring different forms of media, including podcast/audio, documentary shorts, and DIY YouTube-style videos and commercials, to tell their own stories using everyday devices such as iPhones, cameras, and tablets.

Week 5 (July 30-August 3): In this lively and action packed dance week, young movers use their bodies and imaginations to create their own movement and explore a variety of dance traditions that include modern, hip hop, ballet, jazz, acro, and more.

Register for: MegaBAXers | GigaBAXers

Week 6 (August 6-10): A twist on traditional musical theater, young performers will explore voice, instruments, song making, and staging. Drawing on familiar stories and songs, young artists explore characters and scenes, adapt and author material, and enjoy a collaborative process as they gain confidence in their own creative voices.

Week 7 ( August 13-17): Tumbling at BAX integrates movement from modern dance, gymnastics, and partner acrobatics. Tumblers learn fun and fundamental tumbling skills, while increasing their flexibility and weight balance.
