How it Works
Children will explore a variety of arts including circus, dance, music, theater, tumbling and visual arts — each day inspired by a new and creative theme!
Our skilled staff and specialists will give their activities a new twist by exploring the endless possibilities of food, super heroes, time travel, movies, trains and much much more.
IN THE MORNING students will be divided into two groups to participate in one of the days specialties. After a healthy snack, the groups will swap so that everyone has an opportunity to explore each discipline and their own creative voice. Followed by informal community sharing of what they learned.
IN THE AFTERNOONS students break into smaller groups a.k.a. “pods” and are engaged in an array of Counselor Lead Activities (CLAs) exploring the theme of the day. Each day ends with the entire group coming together for a Group Song or Community Dance followed by an afternoon healthy snack.
What They Might Do
DRAMA-RAMA: Young actors will unleash their imaginations while learning to use their voices and bodies through theater games and storytelling, making for a creative, interactive experience.
MOVEMENT MOJO: More of a dance experience than a class, these action packed dance sessions will keep them grooving. Young movers will use their bodies and imaginations to create their own movement. The perfect forum for kids to learn movement combinations that are challenging and fun. Dance explorations are influenced by modern dance, hip hop, contact improvisation, and capoeira.
TUMBLE JUMBLE: Through acrobatics, dance and yoga, the world will be turned topsy-turvy and upside-down! Basic tumbling skills (cart-wheels and round offs), upside-down skills(head and hand stands) and elements of yoga (asana poses) will be explored.
MUSICAL MADNESS: A twist on traditional musical theater, young performers will learn fun musical numbers that incorporate staging, physicality and vocal technique. They will explore and collaborate, creating songs of their own. Drawing on various acting and singing styles, the experience is designed to help them find their voice along the way.
CIRCUS BERSERKUS: Welcome to the Big Top! In these fun and creative circus sessions, kids will learn basic circus skills, from juggling to stilt-walking, that will push them to build their balance, precision and strength, all while exploring their own unique circus style!
YOU GOTTA HAVE ART: In an exploration of various visual arts media, young artists will employ the farthest reaches of their imaginations to go beyond ordinary arts-and-crafts, creating a whirlwind of paintings, sculptures, collages, and drawings that reflect their view of the world.
What Parents Say
“Who knew that a 7-year-old could be as creative as we’ve seen her be? BAX has brought out a side of her that I don’t think we would have seen otherwise. This is a place that takes very seriously how children can develop creatively.”
— Sara Dean Palmer, parent
“To me, BAX is like a small town arts center. It is clear to me that something very good and very special is happening at BAX.”
— Gabrielle Shubert, parent
“I love the respect that is given to children and each other, the freedom of expression, the safe feeling, the connections my child has made, the non-competitive attitude, the feeling at home, the generosity.”
— BAX parent from Park Slope Parent survey, Summer 2007
